The wide-ranging effects of the tragic BP Deepwater Horizon explosion and subsequent oil spill are examined through an artistic prism and presented at the Bayou Playhouse Sunday.

“SPILL,” featuring narrator Kelli Simpkins reading responses from people impacted by the fatal and environmentally disastrous event, begins at 2:30 p.m., Nov. 4.

Playwright Leigh Fondakowski (The Laramie Project, The People’s Temple) is also the director. She and visual artist Reeva Wortel interviewed people across the political spectrum, including lifelong environmental conservationists; families who lost loved ones in the rig explosion; oilrig works; cleanup workers; politicians; priests and members of the diverse fishing communities across the coast.

While Simpkins reads the script, the audience views a projection screen scrolling portraits of those interviewed.

“All of the subjects are facing out, staring straight ahead at the viewer,” Fondakowski said. “It will be a powerful experience for the audience to spend time with the life-sized portraits after hearing the words of the people.”

“SPILL” was commissioned by the Center for the Arts at Wesleyan University. Additional financial support was offered by the Institute for Advanced Studies at the University of Minnesota, the Left Tilt Fund, The Ensemble Studio Theatre/Alfred P. Sloan Foundation, Bayou Playhouse, Louisiana State University, New Orleans Center for Creative Arts, The Study Group and a crowd-funding campaign on USA Projects.

Tickets cost $15 in advance and $18 at the door. For more information, or to purchase tickets, visit www.bayouplayhouse.com or call (888) 992-2968.

For one time only, “Spill” plays at 2:30 p.m., Nov. 4 at the Bayou Playhouse.
