A Lafourche Parish Sheriff’s Office employee and a local organization partnered recently to help LPSO’s popular Bike Patrol Unit.

Sheriff Craig Webre announced last week that a LPSO employee gave money through the Community Crusaders of Lafourche, which will now provide two new bikes for the parish’s Bike Patrol fleet.

The funding for the donation was provided to the Community Crusaders by LPSO deputy John “Jac” Culver and his wife Mary.

Webre said the donation will help LPSO’s efforts in the future. He added that it’s always a great thing to see an employee doing something worthwhile to help the community.

The donation totaled $4,000, according to a news release issued by LPSO.

“We are very grateful for any donation, but it is really special when the source is one of our own employees,” Webre said. “We thank the Culvers and the Community Crusaders of Lafourche for assisting us in purchasing this new equipment which will help provide a much improved and safer experience for our Bike Patrol deputies in addition to saving the taxpayers money.”

The bikes purchased are Volcanic brand, and they are made specifically for those in the bike patrol industry so that they can withstand the rigors of daily patrol.

The wheels on the bikes are 29 inches in diameter, which is larger than the 26-inch wheels on the other bikes in LPSO’s fleet.

The enhanced size is to allow the wheels to withstand the long distances that need to be traveled when on patrol.

In addition to the purchase, the Culver family also provided LPSO with the lighting and accessories that come with the units.

LPSO assigned the new equipment to Sergeant Todd Prevost and Deputy Jason Matherne.

They are the only deputies LPSO has that are assigned full-time to the Bike Patrol Section.

In addition to the full-time staffers, LSPO also has 16 supplemental riders who assist when needed.

Websre said Bike Patrol is important to parish safety and is a useful tool in certain situations.

It is deployed strategically in areas – often working alongside Lafourche’s POP (Problem-Oriented Policing) Squad in proactive efforts to fight crime.

Bike Patrol is often also utilized during Mardi Gras and other high traffic events.

The machinery allows deputies to quickly navigate through big crowds to respond to trouble that may arise.

Each LPSO Bike Patrol Deputy and supplemental rider has been trained and certified by the International Police Mountain Bike Association, according to the news release.
