Houma Police arrested a man who had barricaded himself inside his home Thursday morning with his 5-year-old son, according to Chief Todd Duplantis.

Officers first received a call at around 8 a.m. this morning from the child’s mother. When officers arrived at the house, located at 174 Wilson St. in Houma, she told them that she was concerned for her son’s safety.

The man, who neighbors said is named Saul Landry, refused to speak to officers or exit the house.

That was when a hostage negotiator and the HPD SWAT team was called in to negotiate the child’s release, Duplantis said. The negotiator had been speaking with Landry since 8 a.m. and negotiated the child’s release at 11 a.m.

At noon, Landry surrendered to the HPD SWAT team.

He is currently being transferred to Chabert Medical Center for a psychological evaluation, Duplantis said.

Officers recovered various weapons from the home. They have been taken by HPD for safekeeping, Duplantis said in an email.

So far, Landry has no been charged with any crimes and that has yet to be determined, Duplantis said.

“You can tell he’s been on drugs lately,” said Courtney Savoie, a neighbor of Landry’s. “Things seem to have been going downhill for the past few months.”

Savoie said that even though Landry may have a substance abuse problem, he is still a good father who loves his son.
