With the help of local businesses and members of the community, Bless Your Heart, a local non-profit organization partnered with HERE NOLA to host its “Adopt an IDA Kid ” program, providing 2,025 children in Terrebonne and Lafourche Parish with a joyful Christmas.

The foundation announced its partnership with HERE NOLA for the program earlier this month, calling on the community to help spread joy to children who were affected by Hurricane Ida. With the help of organizations like GIS: Grand Isle Shipyard, VergesRome Architects, and Dufrene Lumber,  BYH had a total of 1,850 children adopted just before Christmas. The foundation covered the remaining 175 children, resulting in a total of 2,025 children adopted for the holidays.

“This project cost us about $35,000. In addition to running the program, we were able to partner with the Lafourche Parish Sheriff’s Office to help purchase bikes,” said BYH Co-founder Hillary Krum Danos. “It was very successful. We are so thankful for all of the help we had with volunteers shopping, delivering, and everyone who adopted a child. We pretty much had a smooth run.”

Children received holiday gifts including Barbie dolls, bikes, basketballs, and much more. Adopters had the opportunity to pick a child from a list, showing their age range and Christmas wish list. Once they selected the child of their choice, adopters were given the option to mail gifts directly to the child’s home or have BYH deliver them in person.

With the help of many sponsors and team members, Grand Isle Shipyard contributed to the program by adopting 50 children, delivering gifts to their front door.

“It has been such an amazing few weeks working with local organizations, HERE NOLA ,and Bless Your Heart with their “Adopt an Ida Kid” Christmas Angels Program,” reads a statement from GIS. “We adopted a total of 50 kids through the program, and we are grateful for the opportunity to be able to make a difference in so many family’s lives experiencing hardship this holiday season.”

Danos expressed gratitude for the help received from volunteers to help the program run successfully. “We would definitely like to thank all of our volunteers, specifically Rene Lafont, and Brena Bruce. They both did a lot of shopping, wrapping, and delivering. Also, Dufrene Lumber, who donated a surplus of toys to us to add to extra gifts to the angel kids, we are very thankful.”
