Jimmy Cantrelle has ousted Republican incumbent Charlotte Randolph by 2,249 votes in the race for the Lafourche Parish presidency.

Cantrelle, who has no party affiliation, netted 55 percent of the votes cast during Saturday’s run-off election.

“I just want to thank all of the people – there are too many people to mention – that helped me, all of the people who voted for me, and all of the people who voted,” Cantrellesaid.

Cantrelle said he believes his win is indicative of Lafourche residents’ desire for “change” in administration, term limits for the parish president and in the parish construction permitting process.

Randolph said she was disappointed with Saturday’s result.

“Well, we were outspent [in election spending], certainly,” Randolph said when asked why she believed she lost. “And I think there is a lot to be said about, perhaps, being in office too long. But we gave it all we could and we’re proud of what we accomplished and we’re moving on.”

Cantrelle raised more than $151,000 for his campaign. However, only $2,800 of Cantrelle’s money came in the form of contributions. The rest of the war chest Cantrellefunded himself, spending $148,000.

In comparison, Randolph raised $120,000, all in the form of contributions.

When asked what her next move, Randolph said, “A few days off may be in order.”
