U.S. Senator Bill Cassidy, M.D. (R-LA) released the following statement on his intention to become the next Ranking Member of the U.S. Senate Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions (HELP) Committee. The formal process to seat the next ranking member will take place in the new Congress.

“It is an honor to have this position, not just to have it but to do something with it to serve the people of Louisiana and the United States of America,” said Dr. Cassidy. “I look forward to securing real solutions for issues facing us all.”

The HELP Committee stems back to the mid-1800s as the Committee on Education and later became known as the Education and Labor Committee. It wasn’t until 1999 that the official name of the Health, Education, Labor and Pensions (HELP) Committee came about. The committee is composed of three subcommittees that have broad jurisdiction over the nation’s health care, education, employment, and retirement policies. The current ranking member is Richard Burr (Rep. NC) and he currently sits on the committee.
