A helicopter with one person aboard crashed into the waters of Bayou Barre south of Montegut Monday, the Coast Guard in New Orleans has confirmed. 


Terrebonne Parish authorities reported that a body was recovered shortly afterward.

Petty Officer 3rd Class Travis Magee, a Coast Guard spokesman, said watchstanders were notified at 11:45 a.m. that Westwind Helicopters Inc. of Santa Fe Texas that communications were lost with one of its aircraft. 

A Coast Guard MH80-Dolphin helicopter was diverted from another assignment to a location where contact was last reported. 


Terrebonne Parish Sheriff’s Office spokesman, Maj. Malcolm Wolfe, confirmed that a Water Patrol unit was operating at the scene.

Recovery of one body – believed at this time to be the only person on board – was made in the afternoon and family members notified.

The company’s fleet – primarily Bell helicopters – flies out of Houma, Abbeville and Venice in Louisiana, as well as Santa Fe and Rockport in Texas.


Westwind serves the oil and gas industry. A spokesman for the company had not returned calls as of 3:00 pm Monday.
