Officials in Lafourche and Terrebonne parishes are mourning the death of 84-year-old Richard “Dick” Guidry, a former state legislator who is credited with helping build vital drainage and levee systems throughout the region at a time when their value was not as widely recognized as it is today.

Born Sept. 22, 1929, Guidry, a native of Galliano, is considered the youngest person ever elected to the Louisiana House of Representatives. In addition to his government involvement, Guidry, a Democrat, owned several businesses that included oil and gas exploration as well as a landmark drive-in movie theater that was dismantled years ago.

Guidry’s last consecutive term of service in the House was from 1964 to 1976; he served 16 years in the Legislature altogether. He has been inducted into the Louisiana Political Hall of Fame, and is fondly remembered by those with whom he served as well as people who serve the people of Louisiana in various capacities today.

Terrebonne Parish President Michel Claudet is among those who remember Guidry well.

“Dick Guidry was a mentor to many of us in south Louisiana,” Claudet said. “He was a leader in flood protection and his service to our entire region will be greatly missed. “

Lafourche Parish President Charlotte Randolph expressed similar sentiments.

“Dick Guidry’s legislative efforts, from levee districts to major highways, laid a solid foundation upon which Lafourche has grown and prospered,” Randolph said. “We owe him much.”

Guidry was buried Monday at the St. Joseph Catholic Church Cemetery in Galliano. A son of John L. and Lillian Guidry, he is survived by his wife of 62 years, Phyllis; two sons, Dennis and David; two daughters, Lillie Ledet and Lisa Guidry Rogers; a brother, Robert and a sister, Rosie Harris.
