Lafourche Parish councilman Lindel Toups, suffering from liver cancer, did not attend last Tuesday’s council meeting in advance of a medical procedure later in the week.

During an Oct. 19 surgery when doctors were slated to remove a portion of Toups’ liver, they found that his cancer had spread and did not remove the portion of the organ as initially planned, according to his wife.

“He said it would just cause him more pain and that he would rather just close him up and try to get him chemotherapy or radiation or maybe both,” she said.

Toups said in a phone interview with The Times that he intends on continuing serving as the parish’s District 6 councilman.

“I’m giving this thing hell. I’m going to beat it,” he said.
