Shortly before 3:00 a.m. on December 12, 2020, Troopers with Troop C responded to a single-vehicle crash with serious injuries on LA 308 just south of Valentine. The driver, 34-year-old Eric Verdin of Cut Off, ultimately succumbed to his injuries.

The preliminary investigation revealed Verdin was traveling south on LA 308 in a 2003 Ford pickup. For reasons still under investigation, Verdin ran off of the roadway to the right and struck a tree. He suffered serious injuries and was transported to University Medical Center in New Orleans by Acadian Ambulance Air Med Service. On December 14th, Verdin died at the hospital as a result of his injuries.

Impairment and seat belt use is unknown at this time and a toxicology report is pending. The investigation remains active and is ongoing.

With the holiday season upon us, please take a moment to put the safety of you and your loved ones ahead of everything else. Aside from sound decisions behind the wheel, speak to your family and friends about the consequences of impaired driving. Remind them that putting on a seatbelt greatly reduces the chances of being killed or seriously injured in a crash. Speak to them about the dangers of distracted driving. The conversation you have today could be the difference tomorrow.

Troop C has investigated 31 fatal crashes resulting in 33 deaths in 2020.
