Terrebonne School Board’s district 7 seat will be a run-off between 20-year school board veteran Roger “Dale” DeHart and David Ohlmeyer, who served a term on the board from 1991 to 1994.

“I came into a race to help students achieve academic excellence and to get a good education and I have been working towards that goal for 20 years,” DeHart said, and if re-elected, plans to continue working toward that ultimate goal.

DeHart, 58, and a Democrat, said in the past he has been successful in increasing funding to get teachers better pay, and worked on gaining money for construction projects within the district.

He plans to focus on student comprehension and early childhood programs to better prepare students for higher-level academics.

Ohlmeyer, 62, and a Republican, is also dedicated to higher academic standards, and plans to raise the bar if elected.

“The current board is proud of the fact that it has raised the educational performance scores to 90.1,” he said.11 “That is on a 200-point is scale. They are proud to raise the level to just below mediocre, and we need to raise those to at least equal to the state goal of 114 by 2014.”

Ohlmeyer, being a former CPA said he also plans to bring fiscal responsibility to the board.

“Fiscal responsibility would be beneficial to school system and tax payers as well, especially considering the financial mess the board is in light of recent cuts,” he said.

DeHart is retired from recreation maintenance for Recreation District 10. Married and the father of 10 children, he is a Terrebonne High School graduate.

Ohlmeyer is a retired CPA and chief financial officer for the New Orleans Convention Center. He is married and the father of three children. A graduate from Loyola University, he holds a master’s degree in finance and management from the University of New Orleans.
