The American Rescue Plan Act of 2021 expanded the annual federal Child Tax Credit from $2,000 per child to $3,000 (for children ages 6+) or $3,600 (for children under 6) per child and raised the age limit from 16 to 17. All working families will get the full credit if they make $150,000 or less as a couple or $112,500 per family with a single parent. The federal government is paying families half of their Child Tax Credit in monthly installments between July and December 2021. The other half would be received as a credit when the family files their 2021 taxes in 2022.

These payments do NOT affect a family’s eligibility for SNAP, FITAP or KCSP.

Most families will automatically receive the monthly payments without taking any action because they either (1) filed taxes for 2020 and/or 2019, or (2) signed up to receive a stimulus check from the IRS.

Any family who did not file taxes for 2020 or 2019, and did not sign up to receive stimulus checks from the IRS, can register online to ensure they receive the tax credits to which they are entitled. Even if families don’t file taxes, they can still sign up for the child tax credit through the IRS Non-Filer Tool.
