The Bayou Cane Fire Protection District announced Monday that it had achieved a boost in its insurance ranking from a class 3 to class 2, and in turn became the first and only fire department in Terrebonne Parish to earn that distinction.

“The better rating is the result of hard work and dedication of the men and women of Bayou Cane Fire Department,” said Fire Chief Charles Long.

The rating process dates back to September 2008, when administrators began reviewing all operational policies and procedures of parish fire departments. After an initial evaluation was complete, the Bayou Cane Fire Department staff formulated a plan to bring the department up to date on meeting national standards.

Improved ratings translate to lower insurance costs for district taxpayers. Savings depend on the insurance carrier but can range between 5 percent and 15 percent.
