A well-known educational leader from Lafourche’s past died this weekend.

Elmo Broussard, a native of Houma and resident of Raceland passed away on Saturday.


He was 82.

Broussard was a lifelong educator for more than 40 years, even serving as the Superintendent of the Lafourche Parish School System from 1999-2003.

Visitation will be held at St. Hilary of Poitiers Catholic Church on Saturday, July 27th from 8:00 a.m. – 11 a.m. Eulogies will be read beginning at 11:00 a.m. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 12:00 noon with burial to follow in the church cemetery.


Broussard was a leader in academics, but also athletics in Lafourche Parish. 

Known as “Coach”, he coached several sports throughout his career in education, helping to touch the lives of thousands of local children across many generations.

Broussard was a teacher, coach and principal at Raceland Junior High School before getting into educational administration at the main office.


As the Schools Superintendent, Broussard served for four years before retiring. He was replaced by Buddy Reed at the end of the 2003, saying at the time that he wanted to enjoy a new phase in his life.

In that final phase, Broussard spent time with his family, as well as harboring his love for the outdoors as an avid hunter and fisherman.

Mr. Broussard is survived by his wife of 60 years, Kathleen R. Broussard; sons, Michael “Mike” (Jenny) Broussard and Patrick “Pat” (Mary Gail) Broussard; daughters, Kelly Dufrene, Bonnie (Michael, Jr.) Robichaux; brothers, Glenn Broussard and Blair Broussard; sisters, Virgie Broussard and Marilyn Gesser; 12 grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren.


Samart-Mothe Funeral Home is entrusted with arrangements.
