A fishing boat caught fire Monday morning in waters about 35 miles off Grand Isle, the Coast Guard reported, resulting in the rescue of four crew members.

A passing offshore supply vessel effected the rescue of the fishing boat’s crew, who were adrift in a lifeboat. They were later transported by Coast helicopters to hospitals for examination and treatment.

Their conditions were not immediately known.

According to Petty Officer Ryan Tippetts, a Coast Guard spokesman, watchstanders at Coast Guard Sector New Orleans received a report from an offshore supply vessel, the Dustin Santos.

Its crew said there was a vessel on fire and four people in a life-raft.

“The Dustin Santos recovered the four people from the life raft and transferred them to a nearby offshore platform in ship shoal block 154,” the Coast Guard reported.

Sector New Orleans issued an urgent marine information broadcast and directed two Air Station New Orleans MH-65 Dolphin helicopter crews to respond to the incident.

“The helicopter crews transported the four people to Baton Rouge General Hospital and to West Jefferson Medical Center,” the statement says.

Tippetts said the Dustin Santos returned to the burning fishing vessel, identified as the Miss Eva, and extinguished the exterior fire. The owners, he said, would salvage the boat, which does not currently pose a hazard to navigation.
