State Rep. Joe Harrison, R-Gray, was named last Thursday to serve on the Gulf Coast and Atlantic States Regional Task Force.

Appointed by House Speaker Jim Tucker, R-Terrytown, Harrison will be part of an initiative headed by the Southern Legislative Conference and the Council for State Governments to address multi-state concerns regarding federal capacity to respond immediately, effectively and efficiently during a disaster.

“The 15 states of the SLC share a common concern over whether our states can rely on our federal government to respond to both natural and man-made disasters,” Harrison said. “Our recent experiences in responding to the aftermath of storms and the Deepwater Horizon oil spill revealed significant gaps in the federal government’s ability and preparedness to respond, especially during the critical first hours and days after the event. Through this special task force, we will be able to share best practices to ensure the safety and recovery of our states.”
