A two-vehicle crashed caused a fatality this morning on La. Highway 1 just north of Leeville.

Louisiana State Police Troop C says that preliminary investigation shows that Alvaro Alvarado-Puentes, 31, of Houma, was traveling north on La. Highway 1 in a 2008 Ford Fusion.

For unknown reasons, Puentes crossed a centerline after entering a right curve in the road.

Puentes struck a southbound 2019 Volvo tractor-trailer that was being driven by Edwin Ryder III, of El Cajon, California.

Puentes was properly restrained, but was pronounced dead on the scene.

Ryder was also properly restrained and was not injured in the crash.

Impairment is not known for Puentes and a toxicology report is pending through the Lafourche Parish Coroner’s Office.

Ryder submitted to a breath test and it showed no alcohol present in his system.

The crash is still under investigation and no further information is available at this time.

Louisiana State Troopers would like to take this opportunity to remind motorists to always make good decisions while operating motor vehicles. Never drive while impaired, fatigued, or distracted. Always ensure every occupant is properly restrained, pay close attention to recent changes in child passenger seat laws, and follow all traffic laws. Taking simple precautions such as these can often mean the difference between life and death.
