A 4-year-old Houma boy died Friday afternoon when the 2004 Cadillac CTS driven by his father veered off Shrimpers Row in Dulac into a ditch, striking a driveway and finally coming to rest in the road, state police said.

Authorities said alcohol and improper seat belt restraints contributed to the crash.

Louisiana State Police Troop C spokesman Bryan Zeringue said the driver, Darryl Parfait, 43, of Houma, was uninjured in the crash, which occurred at 1:44 p.m. as the family was returning home after visiting a residence in lower Terrebonne.

Parfait’s blood alcohol concentration was in excess of the legal limit, Zeringue said.

Darryl Parfiat’s wife, Gypsy, 30, who was riding in the front seat was critically injured. Two of the couple’s sons, Aydon Parfait, 6 months old, and Brandon Parfait, 9, were sitting in the center and right rear passenger seats. Both boys suffered severe injuries, Zeringue said.

Jayden Parfait, who was sitting behind his father, died in the crash, the spokesman said.

Gypsy and Aydon Parfait were transported to Leonard Chabert Medical Center, while Brandon Parfait was rushed to Terrebonne General Medical Center.

The Terrebonne Parish coroner pronounced Jayden Parfait dead at the scene. His body was transported to the morgue, Zeringue said.

Zeringue said the Parfaits were not properly restrained in the Cadillac. Although the six-month-old was in an approved child safety seat, Zeringue said the seat was not properly secured.

Darryl Parfait was charged with improper lane usage, DWI with child endangerment, vehicular homicide, three counts of first-degree vehicular negligent injuries, no seat belt and no child restraints. He was booked at the Terrebonne Parish Criminal Justice Complex.

Zeringue said the investigation is ongoing.
