At approximately 11:21 pm Houma Fire Department was dispatched to a reported structure fire in the 1100 block of Schley St. in Houma with unknown occupant status.

Ladder 3 was the first arriving unit on scene and encountered heavy fire conditions in a single-story residential home. It was declared a fully involved working fire and a defensive attack was initiated. A 2.5-inch hose line was deployed to start the initial attack and exposure protection. A water supply was established and more hand lines were deployed to make entry and fully extinguish the fire. All 4 stations were called into this incident due to multiple reports of major fire and exposure concerns.

Crews encountered heavy fire on all sides of the structure but we’re able to get the fire under control in approximately 15 minutes. This was the second fire at this residence in the past 10 days. Houma Police Department received some information about people fleeing the area once the fire started. Police were able to locate and make contact with multiple individuals concerning these reports. The Houma Fire Department fire investigator was dispatched to the scene as the origin of the fire was suspicious in nature.

The home was unoccupied at the time of the fire but a neighboring residence did have some heat damage due to the intensity of the fire. It should be noted that the original fire building had been on fire for some time before fire department units were notified, as much of the roof was burned away upon arrival.

Through a combined effort of the Houma Police and Fire Departments, at least one arrest has been made. The investigation is still ongoing and more arrests are possible as all leads are being pursued. Anyone with information should contact the Houma Fire Department at 985-873-6391.
