An incident involving a local substitute teacher allegedly calling Southdown Elementary School students a racial slur earlier this week is being investigated by the Terrebonne Parish School District.

Superintendent Philip Martin said he couldn’t comment on the specifics of the investigation or give the identity of the accused.

He could confirm, however, that the alleged incident is being looked into by school officials.

“In general — whether an employee is a regular employee or a sub [substitute teacher] — if they ever say or do anything inappropriate, they’ll never work for us again,” Martin said.

Martin noted that substitute teachers are hired on a daily basis at the school level, not the district level. “They all do background checks; they all get on the sub list. Then each school calls subs as they need,” he said.

The Times is aware of the identity of the substitute teacher but is waiting for official confirmation.
