The Houma Intracoastal Waterway Tunnel will be closed for traffic during daytime hours next week so that workers may conduct inspections.

The Houma Police Department announced on its Facebook page on Wednesday that the popular roadway will have shortened travel hours, beginning on Monday and lasting until Thursday.

According to the news release, the tunnel will be closed from April 17-20 from 9 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. on each day.

Inspectors will be looking at the tunnel to make sure that there are no problems that need future maintenance.

City officials said the times were specifically constructed to avoid the busiest traffic times for people going to and leaving work.

They also urge folks to give a few extra minutes of commute time during the closure if your route is impacted by the closure.
