The start of summer for many means attending pool or backyard parties, and participating in outdoor activities. While enjoying the long summer days, it’s easy to forget to stay hydrated to avoid heat related illnesses. Yesterday was National Hydration Day, celebrated annually on June 23, to spread awareness on the importance of drinking plenty of fluids and the health risks associated with dehydration.

The day was created and named in honor of the late professional football coach, Victor Hawkins. Seeking a product to keep his players hydrated on the field, Hawkins invented a special hydrating mouth guard, which is now sold by SafeTGard. The company launched the annual celebration in Hawkins memory. Whether you’re a mail carrier, lifeguard, athlete, or are just outside in the heat, it is imperative that you take the proper precautions to avoid health related illness caused by dehydration. Feeling thirsty, tired, dizzy, or light-headed are all signs of dehydration.

“Remember to drink plenty of fluids, regardless of how active you are. Don’t wait until you are thirsty,” reads a statement from Thibodaux Regional Health System. In addition, the hospital warns the community about the importance of wearing sunscreen “Sunburn is not only bad for your skin, it also affects your body’s ability to cool down and can make you dehydrated. If you must be outdoors, protect yourself by wearing sunscreen with SPF 15 or higher and “broad spectrum” or “UVA/UVB protection” on the label. Apply 30 minutes prior to going outdoors.”

Beat the heat with these hydration tips:

  • Always carry a water bottle
  • Infuse plain water with herbs
  • Eat fresh fruits and vegetables that contain water rather than processed snacks
  • Limit caffeine and alcohol intake
  • Don’t wait until you’re thirsty to drink water
  • Wear sunscreen
  • Dress for the heat
