A 70-year-old Illinois native died in Pointe aux Chenes yesterday after falling from a boat.

Sheriff Jerry Larpenter said that around 12:33 p.m. yesterday, deputies were called to a medical emergency on the 4200 block of La. Highway 665 in Pointe aux Chenes after receiving a call that a man on a boat had fallen into the water.

Upon arrival, authorities learned that Johnny Martin, of Pekin, Illinois, was a passenger on a small aluminum hull boat which the operator stopped at a dock.

Both the operator and the passenger attempted to offload a 50-quart ice chest containing fish caught earlier in the day.

According to witness statements, the boat drifted away from the dock and both Martin and the ice chest fell into the water with Martin hitting his head.

He was removed from the water and CPR was initiated.

The Montegut Fire Department had responded and was working at the scene when deputies arrived.

TPSO detectives also responded, and a determination was made that there was no foul play. The Terrebonne Parish Coroner advised deputies that the death was due to natural causes, pending receipt of a toxicology report.
