Dennis Chiasson will try to win the 10th District School Board seat election for the sixth consecutive year Oct. 2, when he is on the ballot with a former school board member, Claude Richardel.

Chiasson’s primary focus is striking the Windfall Elimination Provision, which affects employees in the school system who previously retired from another job.

When a school district worker retires for the second time, and the first with the school system, they lose their social security payments. Chiasson said 600 retirees have been affected and more than 500 active employees will be affected.

Richardel preceded Chiasson on the board 20 years ago. He said he wants to find a way to bring God into the school system, make certain that they are providing the best education possible and improve the students’ post-secondary options.

“I don’t feel that they help all children once they graduate to get into college,” Richardel said. “There seems to be some kind of disconnect there, maybe they’re not providing the complete information.”

Chiasson is a member of the Insurance Committee and Policy and Procedures Committee.

Richardel said extra-curricular activities need attention, but he wants to take some of the spotlight off athletics.

“I would like to have more activities other than the concentration on sports,” he said. “I want to give the students a better-rounded education and prepare them better for the future.”
