The Lafourche Parish 3rd District school board seat will be determined in a rematch of a 2006 run-off between the incumbent Richmond “Rev” Boyd and Eva Mae Queen Shanklin.

Boyd is the school board’s current Master at Arms / Parliamentarian, as appointed by the board president. He serves on the Transportation Committee and Policy and Procedure Committee.

“My number one focus right now is the budget,” Boyd said. “The state and bureaucrats in Baton Rouge are cutting our money left and right. We are going to have to lobby the legislature real, real hard this year.”

Although she lost to Boyd four years ago, Shanklin said her goals and mission remain the same.

“I intend to be the active leader that I’ve always been in the community,” Shanklin said. “I would provide support for the teachers, support for admin and staff and for the students and parents.

“My focus is on the financial difficulties that are in the educational system at this time.”

Boyd talked about the career center and the positive impact it would have in both preparing students for the post-secondary world and keeping them in school.

“I’m also focused on the career center,” Boyd said. “We’ve got that in the plans, and I really want to make sure the kids that come out of high school are prepared for the workforce or college.”

Shanklin said her leadership skills are one quality that would make her a good board member.

“My qualifications as a leader have instilled me into being a candidate for the school board,” Shanklin said. “I ran four years ago, didn’t win and I pray that I win this time because my goals and mission are still the same.”
