The Lafourche Parish School District has earned an “A” rating from the Louisiana Department of Education’s district performance score.

The school system scored third in the state, an achievement administrators are hailing as a remarkable improvement from its prior showings.

In 2016 Lafourche ranked 14th and the following year 13th in the state.

“We are very proud of this rating,” said Superintendent Jo Ann Matthews said. “Our success is a direct result of the commitment of our teachers, staff, students and parents – and their dedication to high academic standards and the pursuit of excellence.”

Since 1999, Louisiana has issued School Performance Scores for its public schools, based on student achievement data. The state adopted letter grades (A-F) to clearly communicate the quality of school performance to families and the public. Scores are based on a combination of assessment scores, credits earned and graduation performance depending on grade level.

Under the same scoring system, Terrebonne Parish schools received an overall grade of “B,” an examination of the state’s records shows.

All schools with sufficient data receive school performance scores. This year the point value for academic achievement levels were changed, which made it more difficult to attained an A rating under the new calculation

The Lafourche Parish School District performance scores overall have maintained an “A” under the old rating. The new method of determining school performance, administrators noted, makes the top grade an even greater achievement.

The district is now ranked third in the state for mastery growth, with an increase of 6.43 percent based on old ratings from 2017 to 2018.

The Lafourche district serves all of Lafourche Parish, more than 15,000 students in 30 schools, with approximately 2,300 employees.
