Incumbent state Attorney General James “Buddy” Caldwell, Republican, was unseated tonight by Jeff Landry, Republican.
Landry has 56 percent of more than 1.1 million votes cast statewide. The numbers include early voting and 3,921 of 3,945 precincts reporting ballot results to the Secretary of State’s office.
“I want to thank God, my family and my friends,” Landry said in a release. “I want everyone to recognize that this effort was a bi-partisan effort because good, effective government belongs to everyone.”
Landry said in the release that “as Louisiana’s next Attorney General, I will treat everybody fairly and equally so all citizens can develop trust that their government is there to work for them, not against them.”
Landry owns a small business in the oil and gas industryand served as a U.S. Representative for Louisiana’s 3rd Congressional District.
