The Louisiana Department of Health stated today that 12,164 total cases were reported across the state in the four-day holiday weekend. This number includes the 2,619 cases reported since Sunday alone, out of 12,831 tests.

20% of the tests reported since yesterday resulted in new cases. Of these new cases reported to LDH since 12/23, 99% are tied to community spread rather than congregate settings.

This update includes new cases among all age groups, with the largest shares among 18-29yo (27%) and 30-39yo (21%).

“Current vaccines are expected to protect against severe illness, hospitalizations and deaths due to infection with the Omicron variant. However, breakthrough infections in people who are fully vaccinated are likely to occur. The Omicron surge further emphasizes the importance of vaccination and boosters,” said LDH in a previous statement.

On Sunday, the LDH said that COVID-19 hospitalizations have doubled in one week to 450 patients due to the Omicron variant. About 80% of those patients were not fully vaccinated.
