Local brew pub opens this week in Houma

A downtown Houma restaurant hopping into the local brewery mix made its full-time opening this week.

Spigots Brew Pub, located on Barrow Street in the old Lee’s Education Center building, had its grand opening yesterday. The establishment will bring house-brewed beers and pub-style foods in a meticulously decorated, spacious, two-story location.

Spigots is the brainchild of owner Richard Gonsoulin as well as Jacob Aucoin and Knickolas Turner. Gonsoulin has been aiming to bring locally-brewed beer to Houma for years, and he finally found the right team to bring that vision to life in Aucoin, overseeing the entire business’s day-to-day operations, and Turner, who is in charge of brewing.

The pub has been testing its capabilities in preparation for this week’s grand opening. Spigots was open over carnival season in Houma, offering different lunch specials each day of a parade as well as access to its balcony along the parade route. Aucoin said the carnival days were a good chance to get some exposure for the bar and get feedback from customers. He said locals have not provided many bad remarks and said they have particularly liked the beer Turner has been brewing.

“We kind of used that time to stick our toes in the water and take ‘em right back out and see what happens. We gave ourselves an opportunity to work out some bugs before they would have been real issues when we went full-time,” Aucoin said.

This week’s event is a long time coming for the Spigots team, which has pushed back the full-time opening date multiple times. Aucoin and Turner both said Gonsoulin’s patience with the ambitious project have allowed them to focus on the quality of their work over rushing out a product in chase of short-term profits.

“We’ve been pushed back quite some time, but when you’re building a place like this there’s a lot of moving parts, a lot of things that can slow you down. We wanted to take our time and make sure we did everything the right way,” Aucoin said.

Spigots will be open each day of the week. On Mondays, it will be open from 11 a.m. – 2 p.m. for lunch. Tuesday through Saturday, it will be open from 11 a.m. – 10 p.m. On Sunday, it will be open 9 a.m. – 2 p.m. with a breakfast brunch menu only.
