Christmas came early for some Lafourche Parish children.

The Thibodaux Police Department followed in the footsteps of the Lafourche Parish Sheriff’s Office as both agencies had a bike giveaway this year, this being the first year for TPD.

Over 300 bicycles were given out throughout Lafourche Parish with 18 handed out in Thibodaux.

Thibodaux Officer David Melancon said the emotions were running high last Saturday during the giveaway.

“I am not a crier, but I was moved. My eyes were watering, and I was fighting the tears,” Melancon said.

The giveaway took place at the TPD building where children got to meet Santa Claus and get their new bicycles. The children were hand picked by schools throughout Thibodaux. Melancon said they were looking for exceptional students.

“We wanted to give them something to reward them for their hard work,” Melancon said. “There was kid who worked to pay for a bicycle and it got stolen when he was at a friend’s house. It was great to see him get a bike to replace it.”

On Monday, LPSO did their ninth annual giveaway. Lafourche officers drive around and personally deliver bicycles to children.

Sgt. Jeff Prevost was among some of the officers delivering the bicycles and said the most rewarding thing about delivering the bicycles is community relations.

“It gives people the chance to see a different side of the sheriff’s office,” Prevost said.

3-year-old Alyke Coy was among one of the children to receive an early Christmas gift from Prevost.

As Alyke was helped on to his new green bicycle, his uncle, Shakirr Poindexter, had a smile from ear to ear seeing his nephew’s face light up.

“It is cool to see that officers are taking time out of their day to come here and deliver bikes to different kids and families,” Poindexter said. “It lifts them up and helps the parents out who may not have been able to give their kids something for Christmas. It is a reason to be thankful. It is awesome. I think this is really cool and something that needs to continue going on.”
