The Houma-Thibodaux Metro-politan Area had the second-lowest unemployment rate in the state at 3.6 percent for November.

Lafourche Parish had 3.5 percent and Terrebonne Parish 3.6 percent unemployment rates.

The Lafayette area had the lowest unemployment rate at 3.5 percent.

Houma-Thibodaux’s unemployment rate in November saw a significant drop from October, when it was 4 percent, but the number is still larger than the 2.5 percent figure from November 2007 that was the lowest in the state at the time.

For the past couple of years, the Lafayette and Houma-Thibodaux metro areas have had the lowest unemployment rates in the state.

Houma-Thibodaux had fewer people employed in November at 99,693 than in October, but the metro area saw even fewer unemployed at 3,690 than in the previous month. The respective figures for October were 99,803 and 4,137.

The figures show a civilian labor force-the number of employed and unemployed-in Houma-Thibodaux of 103,383 for November and 103,940 for October.

St. Mary Parish had a 4.8 percent unemployment rate for November with a civilian labor force of 23,966.

The state’s unemployment rate dropped from 5.6 percent in October to 5.3 percent in November, making Louisiana one of five states that saw a decrease in unemployment. However, the figures do not yet reflect recent layoffs at the General Motors plant in Shreveport and the International Paper mill in Bastrop.
