The United States Coast Guard awarded Bollinger Shipyards in Lockport a $255 million contract option to produce six more Sentinel-class Fast Response Cutters (FRCs).

Bollinger will now have a grand total of 30 FRCs with a current contract total of $1.4 billion. The FRCs will be delivered to the Coast Guard in 2017 to be stationed at various bases in the U.S.

“We are extremely pleased that the Coast Guard has awarded six additional FRCs to our current contract. This award reflects the continued confidence the Coast Guard has in our vessels,” Chris Bollinger, President of Bollinger Shipyards said.

U.S. Sen. Mary Landrieu, chairwoman of the Senate Appropriations Homeland Security Subcommittee, added six more boats in the 2015 fiscal year homeland security appropriations bill.

“We must replace the Coast Guard’s aging fleet for it to keep carrying out its vital role in protecting our nation,” Landrieu stated.

The Sentinel-class continues to replace the Island class 110-foot patrol boats. FRCs use state-of-the-market command, control, communications and computer technology.

In addition to helping aid the country, the construction of these vessels will incorporate 3,000 jobs as well.

The Coast Guards plans to acquire 58 FRCs; meanwhile they have 36 which are already funded.
