A new charitable foundation intends to benefit the Terrebonne General Medical Center. Comprised of volunteers from area businesses, government and medical professions, the Foundation for TGMC has been designed to develop and maintain a comprehensive program of financial giving to promote, develop and expand the services, functions, purpose, and mission of TGMC.

“The importance of TGMC to our area in providing excellent health care cannot be over emphasized,” board chairman and Southland Steel and Supply owner Mike Fakier said. “The Foundation hopes to help bolster TGMC’s existing reputation as our region’s largest and leading health care facility, thus continuing to assist in attracting new businesses and residents to Terrebonne Parish.”

Along with Fakier, board members include dermatologist Dr. Sarah Haydel as vice chairperson, Terrebonne Parish Council Chairperson Arlanda Williams as secretary, Guidry Group owner Darrin Guidry as treasurer, oncologist Dr. Raul Doria, South Louisiana Bank CEO Chuck Weaver, otolaryngologist Dr. Anthony Herques, Coastal Commerce Bank Vice President Commercial Lending Sharon Bergeron and Volute Inc. General Manager Mark Lee.

Board members have expressed a belief in the importance of TGMC to the region, both as a leading health care facility and as an economic hub.

Part of the foundation’s mission is to promote health screenings and preventative actions to control both short- and long-term health care costs.

“We at TGMC always stress that proper screenings and preventive healthcare are crucial to the physical well being of our population,” TGMC President and CEO Phyllis Peoples said. “We are grateful to the volunteers with The Foundation for helping TGMC build and maintain a healthy community.”

The Foundation for TGMC has scheduled its first fundraising event for Oct. 4. Funds generated from what is being called the Rooftop Round-up will help defray costs associated with the purchase of an outreach vehicle for the medical center.
