As part of a nationwide effort to educate young people about entrepreneurship, businesses in the Tri-parish region and elsewhere assisted them Saturday as part of “National Lemonade Day.”

Among local participants were young entrepreneurs aided by Synergy Bank, who competed for prizes while selling their concoctions at the Terrebonne Parish Courthouse Square, as part of the Houma Open Air Market.

“I really enjoyed this and I would do it again,” said 6-year-old Demore Gardener of Houma, whose lemonade-and-crawfish combination won in the best-tasting category.

With the help of her mother, Vonda, Demore sold glasses of lemonade along with mason jars that contained a dozen crawfish each.

Callie Ezell won second place.

For most creative lemonade stand Scott Christofferson & Kimberly Tyler took the prize.

Kyle Porche and Katie Matherne took second place in the stand category.

The judges were Chris Robinson of Raising Cane’s, Meggie Benoit of Rouses and Sarah Shult, a John Folse Culinary Institute graduate who is the chef at Cypress Columns

The first place winners each received a $50 gift card from Rouses, $50 Visa gift card from Synergy Bank, a $50 gift basked from Rouses and a summer reading tote from the Terrebonne Parish Library.

Texas entrepreneur Michael Holthouse began the program in Houston in 2007. Held annually on the first Saturday in May, Lemonade Day has grown to include more than 200,000 youngsters across the nation.

Google is among the nationwide corporate sponsors.

A total of 16 lemonade stands were erected on the courthouse square grounds in Houma. In Louisiana an estimated 17,000 children ages 4 – 18 participated. Lemonade Day Louisiana was founded in 2010, by entrepreneurs John Georges and Todd Graves.

Vona Gardener and her daughter, Demore won the award for best lemonade at the Houma Lemonade Day event held in front of the Terrebonne Parish courthouse Saturday.
