Shawn Mauldin, who has been the business college dean at Nicholls State for the past three years, was elected to the board of the Society of Louisiana Certified Public Accountants for a two-year term.

The 6,000-plus-member society promotes CPA services to the public, and works as an advocate for the profession to state and local governments, in addition to providing support services for CPAs in Louisiana.

Mauldin, who was the 2006-07 president of the South Central chapter of the society, was elected to the statewide board by the presidents of the other society chapters, and by society board members.

He has sat on the South Central chapter board for five years before his election to the statewide society board.

The South Central chapter covers Lafourche, Terrebonne, Assumption, and St. Mary parishes, though most of the chapter functions take place in Houma.

While he was president, “We tried to provide programs which benefited members of the chapter, such as continuing education programs,” he said. “We brought CPAs together with bankers, and attorneys.”

Because the South Central is relatively small, it has had few people sit on the statewide board, said Mauldin, who is a certified financial planner as well as a CPA.

He is the only current board member who works in higher education.

Mauldin, who had been head of the accounting department at Nicholls State for five years before becoming dean, said that serving on the society’s board and being dean is not difficult. His work with the society is not time-consuming.

He said that the statewide board sets the direction of the society, and provides oversight.
