There’s been a delay in the delivery of the new toll machine kiosks for the Leeville overpass. Blame it on Hurricane Sandy.

The collection kiosks are still scheduled to be installed by the end of the year, according to Henri Boulet, director of the LA1 Coalition. But until then, the state Department of Transportation and Development will continue to have staffers man the toll booths in the southbound lanes.

The original kiosks were knocked out of commission in late spring when an 18-wheeler carrying an oversized load struck and destroyed the machines. To prevent a repeat incident, the DOTD is building a barrier to protect islands on which the machines are installed. Also, more signs will be placed along the highway to alert truckers carrying large loads.

State DOTD officials intend to allow loads not exceeding 10 feet in width to utilize the designated cash lanes. Larger loads will require trucks to use the designated “Geaux Pass” lane. Loads wider than 13 feet must be coordinated with the Louisiana State Police.

The toll machine kiosks due to the Leeville overpass bridge have been delayed. The reason? Hurricane Sandy.
