In 2016, Thibodaux Regional Medical Center changed the way local healthcare would look forever.

This past fall, the hospital launched its multi-million dollar, state-of-the-art Wellness Center – a facility that hospital CEO Greg Stock said will mark a change in the relationship between TRMC and the public.

Stock said the facility is focused on reaching people earlier in life and teaching them the proper methods of healthy living so that they’re less likely to ever get sick.

Since launching, the facility has been highly successful, and has generated thousands of memberships from folks in the surrounding area.

“We want everyone,” Stock said. “This is a place that’s designed for everyone to come out, enjoy themselves and focus on having a happy, healthy life. We don’t want anyone to feel excluded or left out. We don’t want anyone to think that they can’t come to the wellness center. We want everyone. We want men, women and children. We want young and we want old. We want everyone. This is a place for the people.”

The facility is gorgeous.

It covers 242,000 square feet of real estate, and was well-thought out by hospital leaders, who wanted to make sure the wellness center was all-inclusive and had something for people in all stages of life.

The facility features an Imagine Center, a Sports Medicine Center, a Pain Center, a full-sized swimming pool, a basketball gym, a walking track and other amenities, as well.

Since opening, the hospital has taken advantage of its space and has offered several fitness and training courses to the public in an effort to keep people fit. That push, Stock said, will continue in 2017, and the hospital hopes to grow in its training offerings and course load.

The equipment in the facility is the best of its kind, according to Stock, who called everything first-class and state-of-the-art.

“It’s all the latest and best in top-of-the-line equipment,” he said.

The building’s design and color scheme were also chosen strategically, too. He said everything was intentionally made as “bright” as possible to create a lively, happy feel in the facility, which was spearheaded because of TRMC’s continued commitment to promoting healthy living in the community.

“People go to the hospital when they’re sick,” Stock said. “So when someone says they’re going to the hospital, a lot of the time, it’s interpreted as a bad thing or as something that’s a cause for panic. We’re working to change that. At TRMC, we’ve been excellent in clinical care for a long time. Now, we’re trying to go beyond. We want to work now to prevent sicknesses as best we can. We want to teach people how to be healthy. We want people to come to us earlier so that they don’t get sick. For us, we’d like to see people more when they’re up so that we don’t have as many people who are down.”

The wellness center opened its doors in late-October and several lawmakers and dignitaries from around the state gathered at the unveiling ceremony to express their pride in the facility’s completion.

State Rep. Garret Graves said the facility is much-needed and would be great for the area’s economy.

“This right here, in Thibodaux, Louisiana, is shifting the paradigm,” he said at the ceremony. “It’s flipping it over, flipping the model over. This is reducing healthcare costs. This is helping longevity of our lives and enjoyment of our lives.”

Lafourche Parish President Jimmy Cantrelle said he’s proud to have a facility like the wellness center in his parish, touting how impressive it is to get such a facility built without having to raise debt.

Cantrelle said he thanks TRMC for its vision, saying that their desire to have happier, healthier people in the community is an ambition that is admirable and should be applauded by all.

“I think this country was founded by people with vision. I think our forefathers had a lot of vision,” Cantrelle said at the grand opening. “We still have people, especially in our community, that have a vision to do something outstanding. I mean, my hat’s off to these people. It shows you that people still care, that people still want to produce for the people of this parish and this state.”
