A southbound 18-wheeler with a wide load hit the payment kiosk near the entrance to the Leeville overpass last Wednesday, uprooting it and rendering it inoperable.

The incident occurred sometime around 6 p.m., according to Henri Boulet, executive director of the LA1 Coalition, the non-profit group spearheading efforts to finish the elevated roadway to Golden Meadow.

“According to what we are hearing, the truck had a load that stuck out on the sides and, when it pulled away from the payment area, the load hit the machine and the force pulled it up from the ground and knocked it over, rendering it inoperable,” said Boulet. “While this is unfortunate, a new toll collection machine is expected to be in place at the location sometime during the last week of August or the first week in September.”

A toll taker will be present 24 hours daily until the new machine arrives, Boulet said. Also, police have been hired to protect the tollbooth. Cameras are also installed to record all transactions.
