The Lafourche Parish Sheriff’s Office hosted its 28th Annual bike give-away on December 17, distributing over 100 bikes to children of families affected by Hurricane Ida.

LPSO Deputy’s loaded their vehicles trucks on Friday to deliver brand new bicycles to children of Lafourche Parish. Due to Hurricane IDA, there was a high level of demand this holiday season; with the help of the Bless Your Heart Foundation and HERE NOLA, LPSO was able to identify the children who were more in need.

“One of the most timeless gifts that any kid can receive is a bicycle. You’ll always remember getting that first bike – it’s a great memory for Christmas,” said Caption Brennan Matherne of LPSO “This is something that Sheriff Webre wanted to do, and over the years the program has evolved but it always comes back to the core which is to be able to provide children in need with a bike for Christmas.”

“This year we changed things up due to Hurricane Ida, we wanted to focus on the most needy children in Lafourche Parish as we do every year,” said Caption Brennan Matherne of LPSO. “This year we teamed up with Bless Your Heart and HERE. They already had a database of the kids in Lafourche and surrounding areas who were severely impacted by the storm. We sort of piggy-backed off of that list and discovered that there were 100 kids in Lafourche Parish that requested a bike for Christmas,” Matherne added.

LPSO began hosting the bike give-away back in 1993, distributing over 4,800 bicycles over the last 28 years. Matherne said Sheriff Craig Webre recognized the need in the community, prompting the annual give-away. “Shortly after Sheriff Craig Webre got elected back in 1991, this is something he really wanted and made happen.”

“The needs of our community are great right now,” said Sheriff Craig Webre. “Rather than duplicating ongoing efforts, we felt teaming with a local nonprofit group who has already identified those most affected by the storm was the best way to reach those most in need. We are grateful to Bless Your Heart and HERE for assisting logistically and financially in helping to ensure these children have a great Christmas in spite of what they have endured.”

“While the public is adopting other kids, we took the bikes off the list, distributing over 100 bicycles in time for the holidays.” Matherne added.
