Throughout the day, the Lafourche Parish Sheriff’s Office will be delivering bicycles to families in need as part of their 27th Annual Christmas Bicycle Giveaway. Over the years LPSO has been able to deliver over 4,500 bicycles including over 100 in 2019.

“Well this is our 27th annual Christmas Bike Giveaway here at the Lafourche Parish Sheriff’s Office. Today we have 264 bikes that we’ll be delivering throughout Lafourche Parish. We have delivery crews here in the North section as well as in the Central and Southern sections of the parish, so we’ll be spread out delivering bikes throughout the day,” said spokesman Lt. Brennan Matherne.

The 200-plus bikes were loaded onto two trailers this morning and will be distributed by the LPSO around Lafourche Parish throughout the day. Matherne explained that this event is the fruit of a coordinated effort between the LPSO and members of the community to identify those in need of help during the holidays and securing the means to provide for those children and their families.

“This is a monumental task, and we have several people here. We probably have more than a dozen people at the Sheriff’s office here helping coordinate the delivery efforts today. Capt. Josh Champagne, this is his first year in charge of the program, and he’s done an excellent job…But really the thanks goes to the members of the community that help make this possible. Certainly, we have a number of members that donate cash donations to the program, so that we’re able to fund it. We also have a number of people who donate bikes for the program. We had one family deliver 11 bikes alone this year,” Matherne said.

Matherne said that LPSO would not be able to put on this giveaway event without the help of the surrounding community. Because of these donations, LPSO has more than doubled the amount of bicycles delivered throughout Lafourche Parish this year.

“It’s been a phenomenal response, and certainly after the year we’ve had…It’s just a joy to work in this community of Lafourche Parish that everybody seems to take care of one another whether it’s a hurricane or a pandemic in this case. The community really stepped up this year and helped us deliver. This is more than twice the amount of bikes that we delivered last year, and we’re just excited,” Matherne said.
