Terrebonne Parish will have a new District 3 Councilman after Gerald Michel defeated incumbent Greg Hood in a run-off election.

Michel, a Republican, took in 1,218 votes for 52.5 percent of the vote, according to unofficial election results. Hood, also Republican, won 1,102 votes to win the remaining 47.5 percent. The unofficial voter turnout in District 3 was 33.2 percent.

Michel said that he is excited to start representing District 3 on Jan. 7. He said vowed to work for each person in his district.

“I’m going to represent every person in my district, whether they voted for me or not. That includes the incumbent, I’ll represent him and everyone else in District 3,” he said.

Michel said his first priority would be to address speed limits on Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard in Houma. He said that although it is a state issue, local politicians should focus on the issue to make state officials aware of the dangers presented by speeding on the busy boulevard.

The councilman-elect admitted he would be learning the ropes on the council, but said he hopes those already on the council and parish president-elect Gordon Dove would help him adjust. Michel said he will use simple rules to be effective on the council.

“I’m going to follow logic and common sense to find the best solutions for my district and for the entire parish,” he said.
