A new music festival will debut in downtown Houma Friday, organized by a local disc jockey with a reputation for empowering youngsters and promoting community unity, brotherhood and sisterhood.

Billed as the “First Annual Juice Fest,” the free event will feature food vendors. Live and recorded music will include gospel, country, upbeat dance and party music, as well as dance team performances and a martial arts demonstration.

Justin “DeeJay “Juice” Patterson has been working closely with local officials to make the event a success.

“I’ve been trying to think of a way to give back to the community, so I created something called Juice Fest like jazz fest, which is basically a multi-genre music festival for all ages outside at the courthouse,” Juice said.

Headliners will include Denisia, known for her cover of Adele’s “Hello,” dancer and performance artist Game Ova Skip, the TFC Brass Band and a JiggAerobics session. Other headliners are billed as “surprise guests” whose identities will only be revealed when they take the stage.

Juice says many in attendance will know instantly who they are.

Local acts will include DJ Will; the Tru Royal Praisers; the HJH Sweethearts; Alyse Michaels and the Tiger Rock martial arts group.

Although Juice says the festival is his give-back, local officials say the record spinner has already been a giver to the community time and again, by mentoring young people one-on-one and sponsoring parties at local gyms and other venues with positive themes.

“I support him 100 percent,” said Terrebonne Parish Councilwoman Arlanda Williams, who was among local officials who helped Juice navigate bureaucratic hurdles as he made plans for the fest. “His theme is bringing people together through music, and that is what he wants to do. This guy is the Martin Luther King Jr. of music and he is able to bring all people together without regard to race, religion or sexual orientation. He is an icon and in that millennial group he is a true leader. He does not promote foolishness and I hope everybody supports it.”

Houma Police Chief Dana Coleman, who plans to attend, is effusive in his praise for Juice.

“When he DJ’s he is all about the children, he has touched a lot of people,” Coleman said.

A special education teacher for the Terrebonne Parish school system, Juice plans to give away special backpacks to youngsters at the event.

Also on hand will be a mobile video game truck, face painting. The program will include an anti-bullying segment.
