This week, Lieutenant Governor Billy Nungesser welcomed the National Lieutenant Governors Association (NLGA) to New Orleans for the 2022 Winter Meeting. It was one of the most attended meetings and included many lieutenant governor-elects who participated in their first meeting. The three days of meetings tackled topics such as childhood obesity, emergency response, and international trade relations.

On Friday morning, NLGA Chairman Lt. Governor Juliana Stratton of Illinois awarded Lt. Governor Nungesser the NLGA Chairman award for his work in leading the association through the COVID-19 crisis and being a voice for national tourism recovery.

Additionally, Dr. Katie Queen, a pediatrician from Covington, was the featured speaker on the epidemic of childhood obesity, insurance, and legislative issues pertaining to health care and Deputy U.S. Ambassador and U.S. Trade Representative Jayme Wright focused on international trade issues.

Lieutenant Governor Nungesser discussed the 2019 resolution he sponsored on requiring inspections of imported seafood. He also discussed the need for a national disaster policy to help lower insurance rates for all natural disasters.

“As many of our new lieutenant governors come off of some tough races, we come together in a bi-partisan way to discuss how we can best help our states,” said Lieutenant Governor Billy Nungesser, a former NLGA Chair.

Lt. Governor Nungesser also discussed the STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Math) work started by the NLGA about 18 months ago and is already impacting thousands of students in 14 states and territories. As part of the 2022 NLGA Winter Meeting, the lieutenant governors in attendance, along with their sponsor CORTEVA, donated 100 Lego toys to the Greater New Orleans STEM group for use directly with children who may have gone without. The Greater New Orleans STEM group draws thousands of K-12 students, their families, and teachers to STEM events, camps, and teacher training every year.

NLGA, organized in 1962, is an independently managed, non-profit, peer-to-peer association (501(c)3) with a mission to promote the office of lieutenant governor in all 50 states and the five U.S. territories by adding to the efficiency and effectiveness of the office and government. NLGA Members include all lieutenant governors and/or the seconds-in-command in each state and territory.
