The Nicholls State University College of Business partnered with Chevron to distribute a $50,000 Hurricane IDA Relief Grant to ten small businesses in Terrebonne and Lafourche Parishes.

The College of Business credits Chevron Corporation for donating the funds to the University to distribute to local businesses following Hurricane IDA. “The money for the small business IDA relief fund came from chevron, they donated the money to Nicholls for us to distribute the funds.” says Dean of Nicholls State College of Business Marilyn Macik’Frey. “The people in Lafourche and Terrebonne Parishes requested economic development, they felt like seeing business restored and coming back was critical to the community recovery,” Macik’Frey added.

Each small business applied for the grant and was chosen by a panel of judges composed of faculty members of the college of business. After deliberating, the judges chose ten small businesses to receive a $5,000 grant. “The response was overwhelming, which highlighted the need that still exists in our community. We were humbled to be able to offer the $5,000 to these small businesses. I had the privilege of calling each of the winners and it was an emotional experience to say the least. The gratitude for our help was so great,” she said.

Emily Becnel, owner of Rose Boutique in Thibodaux said small businesses are the heart of the community and the help of Chevron and NSU helped many, including herself, stay afloat after Hurricane Ida. “My store was closed for over two months due to water damage. The grant helped me stay afloat by helping pay my carpenters, my rent for the months that I was closed, and new inventory for when we opened back up in November,” Becnel said.

The following small businesses are recipients of The Hurricane IDA Relief Fund:

– Bayou Office Machines, LLC.                 – Country Kids Learning Academy, LLC.

– Indigo Clothing LLC                                 – Mobil 1 Lube Express of Houma

– QHS Learning Academy                        – Shoe Shi Boutique

– Song Phi Nong Thai Restaurant          – The Blacklist Martial Arts & Fitness

– Ship N Geaux                                           – Rose’ Boutique of Thibodaux, LLC.

Macik’Frey says the College of Business is honored to help small businesses recover from damages brought on by Hurricane IDA and are hoping to continue to help the community in the new year.
