Nicholls State University is pleased to announce veteran educator Jean Donegan (BA ‘73) as the dean of the College of Liberal Arts

Donegan has over 25 years of experience at Nicholls as an art professor and department head. She has served as the interim liberal arts dean since the College of Arts and Sciences first split in Fall 2019.

“It has been my good fortune to call Nicholls home for the past 26 years as both an educator and administrator,” Donegan said. “As dean of the College of Liberal Arts, I will work with some of the most creative individuals on campus. I look forward to furthering the interests of each department and our college. I am most appreciative of this opportunity and anticipate productive years to come.”

Donegan has made a name for herself on and off-campus for her ability to guide academic initiatives and organize popular campus events. She led the department to receive national accreditation and established their study abroad program. As a devoted member of the community, she has organized the Nicholls CAN food drive, and the beloved annual fundraisers Art Works and Holiday Pottery Sale.

“The very essence of Jean is reflected in her energy, her passion and her approach. She gives 100 percent of herself in all she undertakes,” said Dr. Sue Westbrook, provost and vice president for academic affairs. “During the interview process – which included students, faculty and administrative representatives – it was apparent that there was tremendous mutual respect for open and honest communication. I believe in her commitment to Nicholls, and in her vision for the College of Liberal Arts.”

As dean, Donegan will oversee seven academic departments with over 1,030 students. The departments include:

  • Art
  • History & Geography
  • Interdisciplinary Studies
  • Languages & Literature
  • Mass Communication
  • Music
  • Social Sciences.
