The College Band Directors National Association has selected the Nicholls State University Wind Ensemble to perform at its 2022 Southern Division Conference in February at the University of South Carolina.

Led by Dr. Jason Ladd, the wind ensemble will preview their conference performance with a free concert on Tuesday, Feb. 22 in the Mary and Al Danos Theater.

Dr. Ladd said the performance focuses on “new music for flexible ensemble.” The program will feature the premiere of Confronting Chaos by Dr. Ben Robichaux and flexible arrangements of music from composers Dr. Mathew Fuerst, Dr. Kimberly Archer and Hwaen Ch’uqi. Also featured is Concerto for Trumpet by Dr. Ladd with Dr. Matthew Swihart as soloist.

The Nicholls Wind Ensemble has played a role in developing and premiering new music in recent years, Dr. Ladd said, something that has brought national attention to the program.

“The expectations for our students will be enormous as the audience will include some of the best band directors in the country and they are going to be playing this music for the first time,” Dr. Ladd said. “But I know this group is up to the task and their performance will bring eyes from all over the country to what we are doing here in Thibodaux.”

The University of South Carolina will host the conference from Feb. 24-26 and the Nicholls Wind Ensemble will perform on Friday, Feb. 25. Members of the Nicholls Wind Ensemble have participated in the CBDNA Intercollegiate Band during the national conferences held in Seattle and Kansas City.

Dr. Ladd said that because of COVID-19 protocols, only 19 students will make the trip to perform.
