A number of Houma-area Neighborhood Watch organizations are hosting get-togethers next week for National Night Out Against Crime.

There are at least nine events taking place on Tuesday night across Houma. The first events start at 4 p.m.

The events are proposed as part of an effort to heighten crime and drug prevention awareness. The meetings, organized by local NHW groups, also aim to foster community between neighbors, citizens and law enforcement officials.

Local safety advocate and organizer Judy Smart is hosting an event at Buquet Pavilion at Southdown Plantation. Her event will feature law enforcement and fire department officials as well as safety lessons, food and a deejay. Smart said police officers will be jumping around different meet-ups, which each have their own particular style.

“Every event has its own personality. Some do a business meeting, some have potlucks, some have games for kids. Some just sit down and talk and visit,” Smart said.

Smart emphasized the events’ appeal to children, noting it could be the first time many of them get to interact with first responders on a personal level.

“This is how kids meet law enforcement, firemen, whatever, while they’re at a young age. They can see that they’re regular human beings and learn they’re people they can trust in a time of crisis,” Smart said.
