Republican “Billy” Nungesser defeated Democrat Melvin “Kip” Holden in Saturday’s run-off race for the state’s lieutenant governor, garnering 55 percent of the vote.


There were more than 1.1 million votes cast throughout the state during early voting and the Nov. 21 election.

In Terrebonne Parish, Nungesser won by a landslide, picking up 72 percent of 21,591 votes cast.

In Lafourche, he earned 75 percent of 22,324 votes cast.


Holden led Nungesser in the primary election last month by 36,246 votes, according to the Secretary of State website.
