The holiday season is upon us, and shoppers can add Christmas trees to the ever-growing list of product shortages affecting the country. Ganier’s Southdown Gardens is one of the many stores that are being impacted by the national Christmas tree shortage.

Ganier’s has proudly supplied Christmas Trees to residents of Terrebonne Parish since 1971. But in 2018 the garden center experienced a setback when their original supplier of thirty years went out of business. Shortly after, the garden center found a new company to supply trees, however, they too have been impacted by the national tree shortages that are being experienced around the country.

“After they began to experience shortages they began to cut off new partnerships which left us without a supplier. After that happens you have to decide on whether you are in or out, and once you get out, you can’t get back in,” says Sue Ganier, owner of Ganier’s Southdown Gardens.

Ganier says the shortage is due to high demand for orders and there’s just not enough trees. “It was really bad last year trying to find trees. It’s the demand of all of the customers wanting a tree and the fact that a cypress tree is a renewable product. You must wait 20 years to get it to maturity to harvest it.”

The bayou area isn’t the only location that’s been impacted by the shortage. According to the American Christmas Tree Association, unprecedented weather events in the Pacific Northwest including fires, drought, and heatwaves, which have impacted live Christmas tree crop yields, are all contributing factors to the shortage of Christmas Trees this holiday season. Customers are encouraged to purchase their trees early to avoid the impacts of potential shortages.
