The Parish Council meeting on March 24 will mark a historic date in our parish’s history. In a special meeting to be held at the Barry Bonvillain Civic Center, the findings of the Recreation Modernization Task Force will be presented for action by the council.

The Recreation Modernization Task Force is by far the most complete, wide-ranging study of recreation ever conducted in the history of Terrebonne Parish. Every possible topic surrounding recreation was covered—ranging from sports programming, to facilities, to taxpayer accountability, to ensuring equitable access for all children.

The Task Force went bigger than any of us on the Parish Council could have imagined when its creation was debated last fall. Their countless hours of research over the past six months has yielded an over 30-page series of specific, actionable recommendations, with over 1,500 pages of supporting documentation to back-up its findings.  A municipality such as Terrebonne Parish could easily spend $100,000 or more of taxpayer money for out-of-town consultants to generate such a report. But, residents of our parish volunteered their time to make it happen.

The volunteers of the Task Force represent diverse stakeholders from every corner of our parish, who came together in the spirit of improving Terrebonne. I personally believe their deep understanding of our parish and appreciation for its unique history and culture has produced a report far superior to what a professional consultant would have ever generated.

We owe the volunteers of the Task Force a debt of gratitude, to take their proposed solutions seriously, and support the findings at the council meeting on March 24 at 6:00 PM.
